A CONTEXTUALIZED APPROACH
What is contextualized therapy? It’s where clients engage in therapy in a real life or home-like setting. In contextualized treatment, we focus efforts on functional aspects of our client’s lives.
An example of contextualized therapy would be sitting at a table in a restaurant ordering from a menu. This is a meaningful activity that incorporates multiple functions such as attention, working memory, visual scanning, decision-making, fine motor control, gross motor control, and balance just to name a few. Other examples of contextualized treatment we’ve used in our clinic include taking orders/waiting tables, bartending, small engine repair, cooking, laundry, office work, landscaping, gardening, transferring in and out of vehicles, nature hikes, and pet care. For some clients such as small children, contextualized therapy is play!
Contextualized treatment is limitless. Our clients achieve greater results from treatment because of a greater interest in therapy, better participation in the sessions and easier carryover to the functional components of their lives.
